Steve
I'm Steve K, a 59-year-old New Yorker and grandfather who didn't start lifting
weights until two years ago, when I first walked into a gym. I was very weak, and very fat-----but I took right
to weightlifting,, and within 6 months I had trimmed my waist from 40" to 34" and gained some muscle,
just by eating clean and working out hard.
I settled at 195 lbs bodyweight, and continued to train.
Last summer, a heavyweight powerlifter at my gym noticed me doing bentover rows with 205 lbs, which apparently
impressed him. He said, "Let's see how strong you are, Gramps," and talked me into working up to max
efforts right there. We determined my max bench was 255.....my squat was 315 x 2....and my deadlift
was 305. (I had never deadlifted before.) He told me (not asked me), "You're in training, and I'm your coach."
That's how I came to follow a powerlifting routine.
By September, I was training for the the USAPL New York State Bench & Dead Championships
(geezer division). My deads had gone up rapidly in just two months, to 385 for one rep, and I was doing nicey
on the other lifts too.
But then on Sept. 30, I tore a bicep tendon loose from the bone and that ended that idea. I had surgery on Oct.
11, and now am in rehab. I consider my aspirations to be delayed, not denied. This is too much fun not to pursue
just because of a setback, and I'm a stubborn old fart, anyway.
I WILL be back.
