The Trophy Case
On this page we will feature a brief sketch of recent accomplishments of the participants on the Weightlifting Discussion Board. This page will show that we not only talk the talk but we walk the walk! Participants of the board are encouraged to notify the webmasters of any athletic competition they take part in. It does not have to be powerlifting only.

2004 Winter Blues Meet
January 18, 2004
Grand Rapids, MI

By Mike King

Squat
685-- no problem
755--Really felt this, but I made it (15#PR).

Coach said it looked very smooth and strong

Shaky for a bit afterward

(Passed on 3rd to save energy)

Bench
380-- again no problem
400-- worked at it but made it
410-- definately max effort for the day-- took forever for me to finish this lift

Very lightheaded after this one.

Deadlift
500-- quick and easy
545-- smooth -5#PR

Total 1710 at 220
(Passed on 3rd to save some for two person deadlift)

2 Person Deadlift (done with Lynne)
600-- incredibally easy. Felt like 135. Especially good since we had never practiced this lift at all.
750-- still easy
815-- Felt like about 315.
This was the end of our attempts and I had just done a full meet before, so we stopped. I think if we had pushed it we could have hit around a
grand.

Stephen did not have as good a day:
Squat
100-- easy and taken butt to calf deep (too deep)
125-- missed twice (took too deep both times and could not recover)

Bench
45-- easy
55-- missed twice- no control going down

Deadlift
95 easy
115 missed
His form was off (showed no control of the bar on squats and bench -- not usual for him) and he just seemed lacking in the energy to make the
lifts.

I weighed in a chunky 354. The sole entrant at SHW for Masters 40-49, I was there to set a squat record. The
current record is 702.5; I was looking at 705-725. The venue was great -- Holiday Inn. The awards were
great -- swords and battle axes.

Squats

Bench

405 (in double denim) miss

IPA National Championships
November 14, 2003
Harrisburg, PA.
By Gary Z.

I competed in the 114-pound weight class in the men’s
amateur, open and masters (40-44) divisions.

My lifts were:
Squat: 365
Bench: 195
Deadlift: 380
Total: 940

I was rather disappointed with my performance as I only went 5/9. But even
at that, the squat, deadlift and total broke my own IPA open and masters
world records. I added 30 pounds to my squat records, 15 pounds to my
deadlift records, and 40 pounds to my total records.

APA Nationals

First of all, meeting everyone again was just fantastic. Kris, Wade,(Rebecca - new friend) Graham and Wes were all familiar faces from Atlanta, and I also met Bill Duncan. Everyone was terrific. It is so great to go to a meet with so much encouragement and support. No matter what happens, you know, EVERYONE is pulling for you.

Started out with squats of course. Inzer hard core custom. Opened with 185, too easy for words. Jumped to 225, suit slipped, still getting seated, I guess, and I wobbled but got it up for 2 white lights and only one red. Went for 235, I let it get in front of me and I leaned forward and that was all she wrote.

Bench press - not very much rest time, only one flight of squaters and feeling concerned. Opened with 135, felt okay but just a little heavy. Fatigue had set in. 145 nuthin. again 145 nuthin' bench was gone. Only got the opener. Disappointed.

U-Turn break (nasty protein bar, also partially melted) Wash it down with Cell Tech, gross.

2 more flights of benchers before Deadlift. Decided to go upstairs to rest in a bed instead of the warm-up room floor. (Also wanted to check on the Clemson - UNC game...Go Tigers!) Layed down for a while.

Getting my second wind. Went back downstairs for the 3rd round of flight 3 in benching, to prepare for Deads. Thank God for Wade and his magic hands. He had finished rubbing down Kris and offered to do me too. Unbelievable... I thought somebody was standing over me with a bag of chips. Such cracking and popping, I think I got an inch taller. What a difference. Got up feeling 100% better.

Still timid about deadlifting I reduced my opener to 235 (was at 255). Got into Inzer hard core gear thanks to Wade, the master "tucker-inner". Pulled 235 like it wasn't there. Went to 255....went right up...Getting brave now, it's PR time. 280...it jumped off the floor. Kris screamed out..."Go for a 4th attempt, see if they'll let you do 300!" I'm freakin out......OKAY LETS DO IT...Woohoo, 300 on the bar....Jerked it up, got to my knees, pulling, pulling couldn't get control of my hips, only inches to go, PULL PULL, gave it a huge jerk, (bad idea) red lights........I got 300 but not legal. But I know I've got 300+ in me, I could feel it.

Daniel's push/pull meet
Posted By: Brian Campbell

As promised, I took Daniel to a push/pull meet as a reward for lifting all summer for football. He just made the 97# class. There wasn't a division for 10 yr.olds, so he was in the 13-15 division.
Bench Press...
75 smoked it.
85 very good.
90 not quite there, psyched him out a bit. But great day for BP, tied his gym PR.
Dead lift...
150 EZ
170 EZ also, tied PR
180 finished the lift, but was called for sloppiness!!! Needed a bit more control of the bar. Looked good, had fun. He was excited because he lifted more than two other 10 yr. olds...the son and nephew of 165# WPO champ. Ron Palmer. He also has a picture with Ron, nice guy! He did an exhibition DL without warming up, street clothes and a belt, 640 no problem! Freaky man!

"I competed in the International Powerlifting Association World Championships
on August 8, 2003, in Harrisburg, PA. I competed in the 114-pound weight
class in the men’s amateur, open and masters (40-44) divisions.

I took first place in both divisions and broke seven IPA world records. My
lifts (in pounds) were: squat: 335, bench: 200, deadlift: 365, total: 900. I
went 8/9, missing only my third bench attempt of 205. I broke the masters’
records in all four categories and the open records in the squat, deadlift,
and total."

2003 Jambalaya Classic
By: Ant
Sunday, 3 August 2003

Well, this was my first USAPL meet and i wasnt quite ready for the strict judges. I didnt bomb and that was one of my goals. I weighed in at 215. I made a lot of stupid mistakes but i will concentrate on them in training so I wont make them again. Here it goes

Squat
All the racks were being used in the warmups so we had to just jump in. Im used to starting with an empty bar but we started at 135. My squats were all shaky. I was warming up inside a rack that didnt let me get my stance without hitting the sides of the rack and throwing me off balance.
I opened with 405. Easy weight but my setup was horrible and i didnt get low enough. The bar got too low on my back. Just nervous on that one. I took 405 again on my second and dunked it for 2 whites. For my third, i was good and warmed up and took 430 for a meet pr. That was my easiest squat and i got 3 whites. I think 460 was there yesterday. Oh well.

Bench...While warming up, i was told that i couldnt bring the bar down as low on my chest as I had been. I had to pretty much change my groove altogether. I changed my opener to 250 because of that. On the opener, i was worried about getting the bar down in the right spot and let my butt come up. LOL, i was told by wade hooper that it actually never touched the bench. Oops. I took 250 again on my second and just flat out forgot to wait for the start command. I really didnt wanna bomb so i took 250 again and finally did everything right. 250 was a joke. It flew up like a warmup everytime. Im pretty sure i could have gave 315 a good ride.

Deads
I finally went 3 for 3 on a lift. Opened at 365 because my back has been hurting. too light. Went to 400, very easy. Then for the third, i got 430. 450 would have probably been the limit today.

Overall, i had a lot of fun even though I only total 1110. I learned that usapl judging is very strict. Met a lot of nice lifters. It was a really layed back meet. Lack of a coach hurt me and michael a lot. We know what we did wrong and will work on that in training. We will put up better numbers in Octber. I need 1275 to qualify for collegiate nats and I will get that. Im not far away strength wise. Later, Ant.

Oh yea...and yes there was jambalaya served to the lifters. Lot better than a trophy lol.

APA's Ironworkers Powerlifting Meet in Lusby, MD
(6/28/03)

Daniel Duncan:
Daniel went to help me at the APA Ironworkers on Saturday. He decided at the last minute to enter.
He went 75 pounds on his squat and missed a 90 pound
3rd attempt on a technicality (Dad red-lighted him); He
missed his 2nd attempt bench at 70 pounds and came
back to get it on his third; he got 145 on his last attempt deadlift.
"Sure I'm proud of him, but for the kind of kid he is than for his lifting." - Bill Duncan

Kirk Roy:
I lifted in the 181 open class.

For all my lifts I set my 5 rep PR as my opener - wanting to be sure to get a good lift on the boards and using the opener as a final warmup. Well, that wasn't good enough for squats. I ended up lifting the weight off center or something, getting it caught on one side of the rack, backing it out anyway (should have reset), and then having to get the spotters to help me. Crap! I repeated for my 2nd and had to work way too hard to get it. At least I got it and was in the meet... I decided to pass on the 3rd attempt as I'd managed to get a bit shaken up and didn't want to risk any low back injuries (shoot, I just had a steroid injection back there on wednesday). For a single I've done 30 lbs more in the gym. I've done 10 lbs more for triples in the gym. Just goes to show how important gym lifts are in a meet...

For bench the opener went easy but the next lifts wouldn't go beyond 5 inches of my chest. Crap again... I suck at bench so no big loss. :)

The good part came with the DLs. The opener went up easy. My 2nd attempt went up fine as well and was a PR lift (both a gym and meet PR). I was simply too spent by the 3rd attempt and barely got it off the floor.

So, the final lifts were:
Squat 415 (-30 from gym PR)
Bench 235 (-30 from gym PR)
DL 500 (75 lb meet PR)
Total 1150 (75 lb meet PR)

So, I did get a DL and total PR but in the next weight class up from my first meet. Nonetheless, I'm pleased enough with the DL that I consider the day a success. Of course, I've got a bunch of stuff I learned to mull over and absorb. I hope to actually apply it in the next meet... :)

Big thanks to Bill Duncan and Scott Taylor!

Meet European Drug Free Powerlifting Championships
Besancon , France
by John Wright

Left at midnight on friday hadnt managed to get any sleep before I left, I thought I would get some on the flight to geneva or the drive to besancon, big mistake.
Arrived in Gneva at 3pm to find our hire car was double booked and no others available agggghhh
Organised a train journey to Besancon 4 trains 7 hours journey.
Arrived in besancon at 11pm got to hotel at 11.30pm locked aggghhhhhh
had to find another hotel eventually got to bed around midnight after 40 sleepless hours.
Up at 7.30 am to take Chris Empson to the meet for his start time at 9.30 am weigh in was between 7.30 and 9.30.
The long journey and the temperature around 104 degrees, really affected us badly and he went squat 110kg first attempt 115 failed and 115 failed. Not good he done 4x110 the week before the meet. At this time I was telling him not to worry and it was about survival.
Bench was a little better 65kgs , 70 kgs then failed 3rd at 72.5 the spotters took it a little early I think he would have got it. Deadlift started at 130 kgs then 140 then failed at 145 not to bad on a better day 145 would have been a second attempt. He still beat 3 world records in the T2 unequipped 67.5 class and lifted unopposed so was worthwhile. We hung around after to watch and help the following flights and after some food got to bed around 9.30pm.
Up on sunday for the equipped section. I was lifting unopposed in the m1 125kg category not a good day at the office. Again the temp was around 104 hot very hot and with no AC.
Attempts:
Squat: 210kg, (464) easy and no problems
230 (507) as I came down my left knee screamed I fought it up and got 3 whites but that was enough never took a 3rd.
Bench:
Crains shirt
145 (319) easy peasy
155(341) 2 inches of my chest and no go
155 again wouldnt move was very disappointed
Didnt have enough time to try the fury but even with it I dont think it would have done any good at all was simply knackered :)
Deads:
210 (464) easy peasy
230 (507) Meet PR and was very very easy
so instead of going 235(517) which was the plan went 240 (528) was so so close maybe 1 inch from lockout I just couldnt push my hips through disappointing but very encouraging on a better day I really think this would have been pretty easy. So one PR, 605 total (1333) not great but I'll take it considering.

USAPL Heavy Metal Classic at Rockaway, NJ.
By Ann K

What a whirlwind.
Tuesday I was on an airplane flying back from vacation.
Wednesday, I learned I was competing.
And before I knew it, I was weighed in and warming up for squats !
It was good, it was bad, and twice it was ugy.
But it was mostly good. . :-)
I had lots of leeway to make weight, so on Howard's advice I ate like a longshoreman on Thursday and Friday, and still weighed in at 131. Being in the first flight, I went to work soon enough.
Squat:
215--lift good
243--lift good (2 lbs short of gym PR)
259 --Ouch ! Didn't set up well, and got pinned at the bottom.
First time I ever bombed a lift. But not the last, as it turned out !
Bench:
Ack ! Flustered by the failed squat, I went out and blew my opener at 155. This was just plain nerves. I jumped the pause and got 3 red lights. I got mad, then I got calm, then I did a little self-talk. I had to show myself that I meant business, so I called for 170.
170--got it, and solidly (equalled gym PR)
Confidence restored.
I called for the smallest possible increase, and waited.
176--Annnnd boom ! (PR and 16 lbs short of the open state record)
Got a nice hand from a roomful of strangers on that one. That will buy you some adrenalin. There was a long wait for deads.

Finally, on the platform again.
232--got it and decided to ask for my gym PR plus 5 lbs.
By this time, drop-outs had shortened the flight.
265--got it ( PR by 5 lbs)
I still had some steam---I thought----and
I needed 281 to hit 700, so, outlandish as it seemed, that's what I asked for.
281--- No fairy tale ending here. I broke well, but my hips came up too soon and the bar stalled at the knees.
The crowd was great, though ----they groaned, then they applauded as if I had made it. THAT was nice.
So, anyway, even tho at time it seemed like a cacophony of errors,
I did total 684. And at the end I had "won" the 132 open over one other girl ---and had lifted more than the 148's that I got to see. As it turned out I was also # 1 in Women's Masters by formula, and # 2 among all seven women by formula. When we got home, waiting for us was.......Thai takeout, my favorite ! Steve had called ahead to the dog sitter and asked her to order it.
Now is that sweet, or what ?
So thanks, Stevie.
And thanks to Richie, my main man at the gym. And thanks to Gabrielle........thanks to the many here always ready to answer a newcomer's questions.....and thanks especially to Howard and Wade, who never steer me wrong.

First Ever Meet Report
By: donnla
Saturday, 7 June 2003, at 2:03 p.m.

This was bench press only, not because I love bench more than the other lifts, but they ran a bench comp along with the U23 competition.

first attempt: 40kg, felt easy.

second: 45 kg, felt more difficult. One judge gave me a red for uneven extension so I was conservative and went for 47.5kg for the enext - which I missed. As in, couldn't get it off the bottom. (all lifts raw, no equipment).

However, I am very happy -
firstly, 45kg is a PR for me, and is, I believe exactly 100lbs :-). So, that's a major milestone for me in terms of bench successes.

NASA Masters/Submasters Nationals.
by Mike B.
187 lbs weight class, Submasters Pure Division (age 30 - 39)
June 7, 2003

Squats went pretty good, I opened light at 462 (3 white lights) and then proceeded to hit a 5lbs PR at 529 lbs (also 3 whites). At this point I didn´t feel I had anything left for the squat, so I passed on my third (saving up for the deadlift)!

Bench Press, my arch nemesis!!! Opened at 314, placed the weight too low on my chest...pause felt like it was an hour...pushed it up for 3 white lights. Went conservative, 325 lbs for 3 more white lights! Decided to try to add a few pounds to the total, 331 would have tied a PR, pushed it halfway (couldn´t finish it)!

On to the deadlift....time to Rock-N-Roll! In the warm up area a couple of us joked about this being our only reason for coming to the meet! During the day a trio of us had been helping each other. When we looked at the flight order we discovered we were the last 3 lifters in the deadlift flight! So, we agreed to play a game of horse (you hit your lift--I´ll hit mine)! I opened at 540, up for 3 white lights. I starting cramping during my warmups...so, I was a little hesitant to go all out on my next lift. Decided to go 562, nice pull (up for 3 whites). On my third attempt I decided to try to tie my 3-lift meet PR of 573, which would have gave me a PR on the total!

Willie one of the trio had made 562 on his third attmept, so I was, for sure, going to pull my 573. I got myself hyped, approached the bar, set up and ripped it from the floor. About halfway up I start to experience "tire shake", then I feel my shoulder pop (dunno what), I continued to pull all the way to the top. Judges turned my down 2 to 1...I think that during the shake, the bar may have gone down a little and then back up. When I completed the lift, my groin on both sides was cramped! It felt good to pull that weight up though and I was the last man standing on my platform!!!

All-in-all not a bad experience. Got to see some old friends and make some new ones! 1 PR and a close call, ended up totalling 5.5 lbs under my best total. 6 for 8, 1416 at 182lbs...1st Place in my division.

AAU Virginia State championships
by Jeff Sanderson

I lifted in the 275 class, Masters 45-49.

Coming in my goals were to break the state records for squat (470), bench (320) and total (1270). My second goal was to total 1300 and a third, stretch goal was to total 1321 and achieve Masters Class One status within AAU.

I left home at 4:00 Sunday morning to make the 6-7:30 weighin window. I arrived at the hall at 6:15, checked in and weighed in at 268. My weight had been a bit of a concern as it appears that my home bathroom scale is about 5 lbs heavy.

Since I was lifting in one of two afternoon flights, I went to Cracker Barrel for pancake, egg and turkey sausage breakfast. Came back for rules meeting at 8:00 and killed some time reading the paper, napping etc and arrived back at the hall around 10:30, in time to see the 198 and 220 class flights.

The afternoon session started at about 1:15 and had two flights, one for 242 and the second for 275/319/SHW.

Meet was conducted in kilos but for convenience I'll report in pound equivalents.

Squat: regular squat racks in use, not monolift.
Opened at 440, easy. Second attempt 484, missed on depth. I thought I had gone low enough but my legs had begun to numb a bit from wraps as there was a slight loading delay. Came back and made 484 on third, semi-hard. Probably left 20-25 lbs on the platform with the squat miss. Did exceed state age-group record of 470.

Bench: opened at 297, no problem. Second attempt at 325, to break record of 320 was a real gut buster. Fought it thru for a good lift. I was really spent after this lift and as I walked back to scorer's table to put in my third attempt serioiusly considered passing. Side note, they were quite strict in enforcing the 60 second time limit from bar loaded command and the 242 flight had only eight lifters, while mine had nine, I believe. So, things moved pretty quickly.

Decided that I hadn't trained and traveled to pass on attempts and put in for 330. Since I train by myself and do not have anyone to give handoffs, that's what I do in competition as well. Mike, one of the loaders had offered a handoff on my second attempt and I had declined. I decided that if I was going to have a shot at this third attempt, I'd better take the handoff. He gave me a good one, I got a fair Press command and powered it up. Not great speed but a better lift than the second. The expeditor even complimented this lift and a random spectator had complimented my squats when I walked past him earlier, so that made me feel great.

My subtotal going into deads, my weakest lift was 815.

Opened at 408 and it was easy. Took second at 440 and it was fast from the floor, slowed a little toward lockout but not too bad. At this point I had a total of 1255.

Flight and meet finished at 4:20, just over three hours, so that was great.

Nonetheless, I was pleased with the way things turned out. 55 pound improvement over my January 25 total. 35 lbs on squat, 10 lbs on bench and 10 lbs on deadlift. Set two new records for squat and bench, and that was part of my thought process in bagging the attempt that would have brought the total record as well.

Iron House Powerlifting and Bench Press Classic

April 12, 2003
By Gary Z.
"Two first place trophies, SIX IPA World Records, 9 for 9 with 27 white lights!!!

On April 12, 2003 I entered the "Iron House Powerlifting and Bench Press Classic" in Newark, Ohio, sanctioned by the IPA. I competed at 114s in the men's, amateur, open and masters (40-44) divisions.

The best word to describe how the contest went is PERFECTION! Everything went just as I had hoped and planned. And making things even more exciting, this was my first contest in 21 years, and I had spent the better part of those 21 years dealing with one health problem after another.

My perfect contest began at weigh-ins the day before when I weighed in at 113.5 pounds. I barely slept that night, but I had slept very well the whole week before, so I felt great while warming up in the morning.

My attempts then went as follows:

Squat: 275 - 290 - 305
Bench: 175 - 190 - 195
Deadlift: 325 - 340 - 350
Total: 850

Now for some details.

Squats:
I could tell at warm-ups that I was going to have a good day. I just felt good. My first attempt then flew up easily. Three whites, and a big relief to get that first attempt in. The second attempt felt just as good.

My third attempt was then for the master's world record. Three whites, and I got it with strength to spare!"

540 2nd smoked it.
551 3rd smoked it.
562 4th smoked it. Gus then came up to me and said you're looking strong today how about a 5th.

584 5th smoked it. Everyone said I should've gone for 600. I was way to conservative here. Next meet I'll feel better in my shirt.

Won best lifter and division and set State record."

John Perry Memorial Meet
Clayton, NC
March 22, 2003
by Ron Shirlie

First off I want to thank all the Judges, Loaders, Spotters and Helpers, there would have been no meet without them. Jason Hocutt and myself were amazed with the turnout but it was the behind the scenes moments that re-inforced my love for this sport and some of its participants. I will post a full meet report with totals prob. Tues---First Bill Crawford---his bench was an astonishing 725 with an injured leg and he only lifted to win the money and donate it to the family---Bill is a true class act---coming down on stories he had heard to support a cause he felt worthy without even knowing Johnny-his bench was nowhere as impressive as his standing after completing it on the bench itself--looking over with tears and fierce intensity set in his eyes and saying that one was for Johnny then giving the money to his parents and his gift certificate to a young teen lifter-Bill set the standard for all of us to follow--its not his astounding bench that makes him a World Class Athlete--its his heart---next
Donnie Thompson---Left his home at 3 AM to bring a monolift all the way up here for the cause and for the love of the sport---platforms and arenas are not nearly big enough to showcase his persona--Lance Loganbill----Also drove 4 hours to bring a set of comp plates and an additional monolift in Johnnys honor--what more could you ask of someone than to freely give all they can to a cause without wanting anything in return----
there were some impressive lifts but I reiterate I was more impressed with the people---
Travis Mash squateed 920lbs totaled 2235 10x bodyweight---but after spending three hours talking with him and his Fiance his outlook on life and lifting easily overshadow any lift he will ever accomplish--he is a true class act with a deep burning passion for the game and it was an honor to have been there to shake his hand
Wade B.I.G. Johnson---drove 10plus hours and provided collars because he felt like he would have loved to have known Johhny and wanted to support his family after finding out how much Johnboy supported others----Kris his wife is extremely kind and also a true guinine person
Brent The Hitman Lever--this mammoth showed more heart on the platform than I have seen in a while--after pulling a Ham, on the first squat he never whined or complained and put in all nine attempts making no excuses or illuding to his injury as an excuse--he still put up monster numbers and showed us all why we should be opptimistic and find the positivity in every situation---and was backed every step of the way by his lovely wife Amy--Brandon C4 Cass what can I say--three meets in four weeks and still pulled a 785 at the end of the day with a 2100 plus total---he came to support me and Amy in this event and because he knew our love for Johnny and how hard this would be--he was more concerned for us than any lift he attempted--he also donated his deadslift winning to the Perry Family-one could not ask for a better person to call a friend--Jay The Rhino Rhyne, Clay The Cougar Castilia and Kara BPB Bohigan--this packed Georgia powerhouse team made the treck from Atlanta---The Rhino also hit a 920 squat and had an awesome total as did the Cougar--I will post them--but their demeaner and concern for the sport and especially Kara's support of Amy through this difficult time--showed that there are still many more good hearted people in this world---and Karas heart shined through like a beacon when she shared a tear with me over a man she never knew---I dont know how there can be that much heart in only 150 lbs of body---and after meeting Clays Mother and hearing her kind words I know the Cougar is much more than a tough mean ass looking powerlifter---he and the Rhino have true class-- Jeff Doylan---a Pro strongman that drove four hours just to remember JP and helped all day load and spot just for the cause---he exemplifies what sportmanship and friendship is all about--- Steve Goggins--who brought an awesome high intensity, fired up powerhouse in Tank, who finished a narrow third in the best overall lifter by less than 2 points---helped us spot and protect our lifters several times---it reminded me of Johnny a world class athlete that was never too busy to help at any event because of his love for the sport and his dedication to other lifters though non-spoken--it was a pleasure to share the same arena with this man Julie Zenmaster Scanlon and Capt kirk drove down just to judge and Julie showed her true colors and kindness by keeping an eye on me and finding a way to make me smile and trod onwards when the words would get stuck in my throat and my mindset would drift back to memories of yesteryear and Johnboy
Jeff McVicar made alot of this possible and helped us get it together bringing bars and weight and helping with setups and takedown--after posting a best 1955 total almost 10x bodyweight---I will post the lifts and incredible results tues--it was one of the most intense and competitive local meets ever bar none
there are many more people I owe a thank you to but I will post them later-if I did not mention you I will --also thanks to the Clayton Crew and all you do daily especially Kyle Smiley Robertson J Pinder and Melanie--and all the Clayton Crew lifted well--Jeremy,Phillip, Brett and Kyle and Congrats to Pete Holtz,Howard Gutnick, and Zach Big Mack Hudak on their Nat records and Zach best Overall Jr----Mike Neal on his great day and Tom Lewis, Bob Gunn and Jon Vette Peterson had awesome benches and the Women that came and competed were great as well to all the Perry family-- we all Did Johnnys Memory Proud and this will just get bigger every year--what a great way to remember a fallen brother in strength--doing what we love to do in his honor--I will also have pics and stories on Amys site by Fri--I will fill everyone in later three days of no sleep is enough

WABDL World Cup Bench Press and Deadlift (Mesa, Arizona)

By Mike B.

Weighed in at 178!

Deadlift
Opener - 529
2nd- 578.5 miss
2nd-578.5 miss

1st Place- Open 181s

My opener went fine...it was a solid lift but didn´t have quite the snap I wanted. I opted to go straight to 578, which would have been a PR. I didn´t see any need in attempting anything in between! I´ll have to wait until another day for the PR!

APF Maryland Championships in Salisbury, MD.
March 8, 2003
By Dan Long

Weighed in right at 260 fully clothed.
My warmups for squats were a little shaky. I did a final warmup of 365 with straps up but no wraps and it was a little wobbly. I figured the wraps would straighten me out. 1st attempt- 197.5K, about 435- was a no brainer. I was SCARED when I got up there though, all the work I've done was coming to closure. I slam dunked it way deep for 3 whites.

On my 2nd, I put in for 227.5, 501 lbs. I was still pretty nervous at this point. I made the lift fine, good depth (Danny was calling for me and I could actually hear him over the music). I lost my balance at the top and had to take a step. No lift. The one side judge says I'm going too deep and I could cut it a little higher if I wanted. So for the 3rd, I retook the same weight. I didn't want to go up and not make the lift and figured it was better to take it again and nail it, which I did. This time I went even deeper though but it didn't matter, I finished with a 501 squat which was fine with me.

Bench is the fun part. My plan was to use the Inzer HD that I've been training in for my opener, then put on the Fury and have some fun. My last warmup of 275 was great, and I was ready. My opener was 135k, just under 300 lbs. I've done this weight a thousand times. Danny was hesistant about lifting off for me, I guess he didn't want to screw me up. So I had the spotters lift off. They handed me the bar too far down towards my feet, and I never had control of it. I struggled to try and bring it back into my groove, but had to rack it. No lift. I was pretty angry with myself and the liftoff. OK, no problem, nail it next time. Well, 2nd attempt, I'm so worried about the liftoff (Jeff McV lifted off this time for me) that I didn't concentrate on the lift. I lost the groove about 2/3 the way up and missed that lift too. Now I was really pissed at myself. One chance left. No way was I going to bomb. Danny kept trying to pump me up, saying you know you can do this, this is easy, come on, get it. I was more ready than I ever was for a lift, and nailed it for 3 whites. The crowd was really behind me too which was great. They were allowing 4th attempts since there were no records established for the fed, so I put on the Fury, asked for 150 kg (about 335), and SMOKED it like a warmup for 3 whites. One of the spotters says, where was that bench before? I told him in my gym bag, cause this is a different shirt! The good thing is, I know I can open up much higher and use the Fury next time. This is a real nice shirt. So I hit a 10lb PR on bench with a lot left in the tank.

Deadlifts were nothing but fun. After the bench thing, it was going to be easy. I opened with 210k, 465lbs. This was an easy weight but I wanted to make sure I was a little conservative as I didn't know how I'd feel after the other lifts. It went up fast and powerful, 3 whites. Next attempt, 232.5, about 515. This also went up fast and strong for 3 whites. I put in for 242.5 for my 3rd, which was 535 and would be a 10lb PR. At this point, Danny says, if you nail this as easy as the 1st 2, I'm putting you in for a 4th for 550. I said no way, he said yeah way. It didn't matter, cause 535 was a true max effort lift. I could not have done 1 more lb. It went up real smooth but it was very difficult. I got 2 whites and a red. I didn't ask what the red was for. I had my eyes closed and didn't see the down command and was probably fidgeting with the weight and got the red for that.

So my final numbers, all of which are a good base for a true meet total were 7 for 10 and 501/335/535. I'm happy with that though I know my bench left a lot on the platform. That will not happen next time, I guarantee it. All of my lifts were state records too, which is a laugher. I was the only one in masters. Too bad Howard couldn't have been there to take 1st place from me.

I can't wait until the next meet!

Chad VanDyke
competed at the same meet, and did FANTASTIC...with a
187.95 kilos squat, 115 kilos bench,190 kilos deadlift
Here is his a pic of his 187.95 kilo squat (a pr)

APA Teenage Nat's/Tristate Open
Brian Propst competed on Saturday, March 1, 2003 in the 198 division...
"I went 7 for 9
Squat 365, 415PR, 425PR
Bench 285, 315PR, 330PR May have had a few more pounds left on bench???
Deadlift 450, 500 (No Go) I think I was just out of gas.

I still got 1205PR for my total. So I was happy with the BP & SQ PR's.

There were a lot of middle school kids that showed up. Some of these kids are really strong and will be great lifters if they keep at it. Tom McCullough the coach at the school, does a lot for the kids around Houston to get them involved in PL. Also we had the honor to have Anthony Clark as our head judge.

Next meet may be in July.
Goals SQ 450, BP 350, DL 500(I will get it) "

WNPF Delaware Open
January 25, 2003 – Newark, Delaware
by Jeff Sandersen
I competed in the 275 Masters 40-49 class and weighed in at 264.

Went 7 for 9 for the day with top lifts of 450 squat, 320 bench and 430 deadlift,
Total of 1200.

In analyzing the results, the bench and deadlift were almost dead on to what my training lifts had predicted. I believe I left 40-50 pounds on the platform in the squat as I missed my first attempt at 410 on depth. This was my first time squatting with straps up and the tightness in the chest and shoulders, combined with also being the first time I had squatted in a monolift led to my not making depth on the opener. My third attempt at 455 was easy weight-wise, so I believe that 490 or 500 was achievable on this day.

Took second place by default. First place competitor went over 1700, including a 500 bench.

WNPF Meet
by Sam Ross, aka Energizer
"I lifted in the novice raw division. IN the squat I went 3 for 3! I did 315#, 365#, 405# which is a 20# PR. DanL was kind enough to wrap my knees for me (Crain's power wraps ROCK by the way!). I think it made a big difference. On my 405 attempt, I did get 1 red for depth. Next time I will go lower.

On the bench, I opened with 350#. Went down and up no problem. This was a WNPF American record for the novice class (old record was 340#). Next attempt was 375#. This went down and up smoothly but I got 3 reds because I did not wait for the press command (rookie mistake). I tried 385# next and stalled 1/2 to 3/4 way up. Had a narrow grip. Will try to widen it a bit.

Next the Deadlift, I opened with 345#, no problem. Next 375#, no trouble but my left hammy started jittering. Then I tried 405#. I got it up so I am happy (30# PR). So for the day I went 405/350/405 for an 1160 total. Not bad for me. I went 7 for 9. How ironic, I did the worst in my best lift! I was hoping for 405# in the bench. Maybe next time.

Regardless, I had fun and will definitely compete again! Thanks for all your help! DanL, good seeing you again and I will try to get up a time so you could help me in the squat and deadlift. Jeff, it was my pleasure meeting you. "

APA East Coast Open
Fort Washington, MD
January 3, 2003

Tom Lewis did a 410 opener, with the shirt pulled up . Took the shirt down some for 435, pretty easy, then pulled it tight for the 475. He took a looooong time to touch, and missing the lockout by being out of the groove (too low).
Tom set a world record in the bench in the 181 class master's 40-49 at 435

Howard Gutnick had anAMAZING deadlift day...
Bench:
Opener: 290 went up smoothly
2nd: 310 stalled about 4 inches above my chest
3rd: 310 stalled again but this time lower. My shirt might have been a little loose, but that's no excuse. I just didn't have the strength to move it fast enough. And this is a weight that I have doubled in the gym. So back to the drawing board working on off the chest strength.

Deadlift::
Opener: 470 went up smoothly without a problem.
2nd: 520 went up smoothly but more slowly for a 10 lb PR and state record.
3rd: 530 left the earth, stalled at my knees, moved again, stalled a little higher, moved again and I locked it out for three whites!!!
So a 20 lb PR in the DL. There were seven guys altogether who competed in the deadlift, and I got best lifter by formula.
Congratulations Howard!!!

John Wright at the WDFPA World Championships
October 19, 2002
Weighed in approx 261lbs

"Story of the squats (the good)
my first lift was 180 kgs and I cant really remember if I done it or not I mean
I did easily but it was so easy and my concentration was so high it just popped up.
second attempt: 210 kgs easy peasy as well very fast and the comments from other lifters were
great kept getting told what a great tecnique I had, thanks to you Guys for that,
although I still think I hold the bar to high.
3rd attempt: 227.5 kgs the magic 500 easy well not quite slowed a lot on the way up but ok
dont think I had much more left to give and
it was a 61lb PR

Bench the not so good
First lift 135 kgs didnt realise that the lifting had started and had to be called to bench I
rushed it far to much was to far up the bench and hit the racks on the way up 3 reds
second attempt 135 was thinking so much about hitting the racks that I forgot to
pause eeeek 3 reds
Third attempt now this is why I think powerlifting has to be the best sport in the world all the competitors gathered round to cheer me on and I mean everyone the noise was intense pressed it easily lesson learned

The deadlift
First attempt 180 again very easy
Second 205 bit slow but ok
Third 215 slow as a tortoise but grunted it out for a 22lb pr

For my first meet am very happy got 4th with a total of 577.5 bench brought my
total down quite a bit should have been more like 600 but ok considering.

There was some great lifting going on around me to be honest I shall have to get
a copy of the results to tell you I was so busy concentrating on my own lifts.
"
