I was the quintessential skinny fat guitar player until my mid-20's.
I had a weight set and messed around with the weights in PE class
when I was a kid but never got into it. In my mid-20's, I got
chunky. By my early 30's, I was fat. And weak.
So I started lifting weights and I started dieting. I followed all
the fad diets of the time and cut almost all the fat and protein out
of my diet. And got fatter. I lifted little tiny weights lots and
lots of times trying to get lean. And got fatter and weaker.
Then I discovered the Zone and started losing weight; although I lost
a lot of muscle with the fat. Then I discovered misc.fitness.weights
and learned that I had to get serious about my weightlifting. And
promptly blew out my right shoulder.
My original goals were basically bodybuilding. I wanted to look good
nekkid. After a while, I realized that I wasn't making any progress
because I was weak. So I started experimenting with powerlifting
types of workouts in an effort to get strong.
There was a movement on MFW to get people to validate their lifting
claims by going to a meet and competing. So I did. I went to an AAU
meet and went 352/185/386 (raw) at a bodyweight of 188# (all weights
unfortunately in pounds). Then I was addicted. A few months later,
I went to another AAU meet and went 392/176/435 (raw) at a bodyweight
of 186#. And blew out my shoulder on my second bench press.
I spent the next couple of years rehabbing my shoulder. Actually,
I'm still rehabbing my shoulder. Last year after a year and a half
of rehab, I competed again at a couple of WNPF meets. I went
405/195/410 (raw) in September at a bodyweight of 196# or so and then
at a push/pull, I went 210/450 (raw) at a bodyweight of about 192#.
My goals now are to continue to get stronger and in better shape
until I die of very old age.
